The Future Jewish Center of Iceland
While Jews have lived in Iceland for more than 100 years, there has never been a Synagogue, Mikvah or Jewish center in the country.
With your partnership we can complete the purchase of a 9000 square foot building in downtown Reykjavik, and upgrade the building to become the Jewish Center of Iceland.
Iceland has had a Jewish population since the late 1800s. Today there are approximately 500 Jews living in Iceland.
In 1916 the first tall building of Iceland (5 stories) was built by Jewish businessman Fritz Natan. It was also the first building lit with electricity.
Judaism was officially recognized as a religion in Iceland in April 2021.
We are the Jewish Community and Chabad House is the world’s northernmost capital.
The first Torah of Iceland was completed and dedicated in Reykjavik in February 2020.
In 2018 a public Menorah was erected for the first time on Laugavegur - the main street of Reykjavik. Honored guest at the annual Menorah lighting events include the First Lady of Iceland and the Mayor of Reykjavik.
In June, Shabbat begins at 11:45pm on Friday and ends at 1:29am on Sunday.
Become a partner in building the first Jewish Center in Iceland by making a dedication in your honor or in honor of your family.
Donors who contribute $2,500 or more will be honored with a plaque in the new building.
You are welcome to earmark your donation for either the Jewish Center or Mikvah.
Donations from the United States are tax deductible. Tax ID# 83-0964730.
